Join us for Gilbert & Sullivan’s, The Gondoliers, the usual ridiculously implausible tale of love, romance, social inequality and everybody living happily ever after. Set in Venice (well there’s a surprise) the show is, no doubt, about Gondoliers; well not really. It is more about an impoverished Spanish aristocratic old codger and his wife and a chap with a drum….and, of course, the usual bevy of beautiful maidens spending most of their time sitting on the Rialto Bridge flower arranging, whilst young gondoliers punt up and down the Grand Canal drinking chianti.
Our two Venetian gondoliers (OK, it is a little bit about Gondoliers), Giuseppe and Marco, are informed that one of them is the heir to the throne of Barataria. However, due to a typical Gilbert & Sullivan mix up, it is impossible to tell which one. Our handsome duo are, of course, delighted and agree to govern their new kingdom together until it can be ascertained which of them is which. However, matters become complicated when the Duke and Duchess of Plaza Toro arrive and reveal that their beautiful daughter, Casilda, was married to the future king as an infant. This news creates quite a stir as Giuseppe and Marco are both newly married to Tessa and Gianetta and Casilda is very much in love with the aforementioned chap with a drum!
Who is the king? Who is the queen? The only way to find out it to book your tickets and come and see for yourself!
